In Honor of Past Beloved Missionary, Jane Ann Newell Nyborg

March 5,1928 – May 1, 2022

Jane Ann Newell was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 5, 1928, to William and Doris Newell. When she moved with her family to Flushing, NY as a young girl, her neighbor invited her to Sunday school. It was there that Jane heard the Gospel for the first time and asked Jesus to be her Savior. She knew from the very beginning that Jesus loved her and she gave Him her whole life, being willing to go wherever He wanted her to. After high school, she attended Providence Bible College and shortly after became the pastor’s assistant at her home church First Presbyterian of Flushing, New York.

Jane met Scott Nyborg in the summer of 1952 at Camp-of-the-Woods. A year later they were married and went on to have 2 children, Tim and Laurie. They became staff members of Gospel Volunteers, Inc., working in the summers at Camp-of-the Woods in Speculator, NY, and in the winters at Park-of-the-Palms in Keystone Heights, FL. When Scott decided he needed more training for ministry, they moved to Columbia, SC so he could attend Columbia Bible College. From there they moved to NYC where Scott went on to work as Executive Secretary of the Christian Business Men’s Committee and then the Executive Director of the Sermons from Science Pavillion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Jane was a constant support to Scott as she stood alongside him and continued to raise their two children.

Latin America Mission was the next part of their journey. After a year of language school in Costa Rica and orientation to the Mission, they were sent to Hazard, KY in Appalachia as advisors to L.A.M.’s program of Evangelism-in-Depth. From there, the family moved to Miami, FL, the U.S. base for the Latin America Mission.

During those years in Miami, as Scott was heading up various ministries for L.A.M., including Christ for Miami, Jane was used by the Lord as she worked in different ministries. First as the Director of Christian Education at Pinelands Presbyterian Church, then as secretary to the headmaster at Westminster Christian School, and finally as the financial secretary for Wayside Baptist Church. Together, Scott and Jane ministered to the city of Miami for 29 years, not only in their daily jobs but also by opening up their home, through Bible studies and prayer meetings. They had a love for the Lord and a love for His church.

In 1997, they retired and moved to Penney Retirement Community in Penney Farms, FL. Much of their time was given to service on their campus, intercessory prayer groups, and Bible studies. On May 1, 2022, Jane went home to be with her Lord at the age of 94. She is survived by her daughter Laurie Nyborg Mashburn, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son Timothy Scott Nyborg and her husband Walter Scott Nyborg.
